Body of Australian man taken by a crocodile found

SYDNEY: Police on Monday recovered the body of a man taken by a large crocodile in northern Australia with rangers confident they have killed the animal responsible.
Sean Cole, 26, was snatched on Saturday in front of at least 15 traumatised onlookers as he swam with a friend across a muddy river that has one of the highest densities of saltwater crocodiles in the world.
Northern Territory police senior constable Wade Rodgers said his body was found early Monday in the area where he was last seen.
"Our thoughts are with the family during this very difficult time," he said.
Witnesses had recounted seeing the animal, believed to be nearly five
metres (16 feet) long, swimming upriver with his body in its jaws.
Cole had been celebrating a friend's 30th birthday on Saturday at the Mary River Wilderness Retreat, about 110 kilometres (70 miles) from the city of Darwin, when he decided to plunge into the water. His friend survived.
The Northern Territory News said a survey three weeks ago recorded four crocodiles over four metres in the area and 10 to 12 measuring more than three metres.
Parks and Wildlife Ranger Tom Nichols said four crocs had been shot,
including the one believed to be responsible for the attack.
"Any animals that were in that range which we believed to be a possible target in the area where the accident took place, we usually take them out for simple reasons," he told ABC radio.
"We do autopsies on those and it's also closure for the families if there's anything there."
Saltwater crocodiles, which can grow up to seven metres long and weigh more than a tonne, are a common feature of Australia's tropical north.
They have been protected since the 1970s and their numbers have increased steadily since, along with the number of human encounters.
In December, a nine-year-old boy was taken by a four-metre crocodile while swimming in the Northern Territory, one month after a seven-year-old girl went missing while swimming, also in the north. (AFP)

DARWIN: A 24-year-old man was snatched by a crocodile in front of at least 15 onlookers as he swam across a northern Australian river with a friend, police said Sunday.
Northern Territory police said the man was with a group celebrating a birthday at the Mary River Wilderness Retreat, about 110 kilometres (70 miles) from Darwin, on Saturday when he decided to plunge into the water.
"They were watching him swim across," senior sergeant Geoff Bahnert told AFP of the group.
"And they just saw a crocodile with him in its jaws."
Police conducted a search for the man, but were unsuccessful. The search was continuing Sunday, Bahnert said, adding that the largest crocodile at the site had been shot and killed as a precaution.
Reports suggested the men had ignored warnings not to swim in the river because of the risk of a crocodile attack.
"We tell people to stay away from the water, they obviously went against this (and) a man was taken," an employee of the resort, Erin Bayard, told News Corp Australia.
"We say to everybody it's full of crocs. It's one of the most populated rivers in the Territory, every couple of kilometres there is a large croc."

Altaf demands Karachi be given under army control

LONDON: Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Chief, Altaf Hussain Tuesday urged upon the Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to hand over control of Karachi to the army, as the provincial government had totally failed to maintain law and order in the city.
Altaf Hussain said that the Lyari gang war terrorists have been attacking the Kachi localities since Monday with rockets and most modern weapons, while the Sindh government, Karachi administration, police and other law enforcing agencies have failed to come to the rescue of the targeted Kachi community and, as a result, several people have thus far been killed and women amid dozens injured.
The persecuted members of the Kachi community took shelter away from their homes in interior Sindh and on the assurance of the Karachi Commissioner to provide them security returned to their homes on Monday. Altaf said these people were left unprotected and at the mercy of Lyari gang war terrorists who attacked them.
Altaf strongly condemned the attack on the Kachi community asked the Sindh chief minister, where is the Sindh government? Why have the police and law enforcing agencies disappeared from the restive areas of Lyari Town and what is the fault of the innocent and poor people of the Kachi community for which they are so cruelly being left at the mercy of the killers of Lyari gang war?
Altaf Hussain appealed to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to hand over the control of Karachi administration to the army in a bid to rescue the people of city including the trading community and industrialists from the Lyari gang war terrorists and extortionists.

KARACHI: Sindh Information Minister, Sharjeel Memon has said that there is no need for handing Karachi over to the army, terming the Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s (MQM) demand a “deep conspiracy.”
Talking to Geo news on Tuesday, the provincial information minister said in the past when various other political parties demanded military operation in Karachi, the MQM used to refuse the demand.
Memon said that that military could temporarily resolve the law and order situation but it was not a long term solution. Rangers and police were taking action against the criminals, he added.

Russia warns US against 'extremely dangerous' Syria attack

Russia warns US against 'extremely dangerous' Syria attack

MOSCOW: Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has warned US Secretary of State John Kerry over the "extremely dangerous consequences" of launching military action against the Syrian regime, the foreign ministry said Monday.
Lavrov told Kerry in a telephone call Sunday that Moscow was "deeply
alarmed" by comments from US officials indicating a readiness to intervene in Syria in the wake of accusations the regime had used chemical weapons, it said in a statement.
"Sergei Lavrov drew attention to the extremely dangerous consequences of a possible new military intervention for the whole Middle East and North Africa region," it added.
Lavrov told Kerry that it appeared certain elements inside the United
States wanted to launch military action in Syria outside of the United Nations to undermine joint US-Russia efforts to organise a peace conference.
The Russian minister urged his US counterpart "to refrain from using
military pressure against Damascus and not to give into provocations."
The ministry said Kerry promised to "attentively" study the arguments of
the Russian side.
Russia underlined the necessity of an objective UN investigation into the claimed chemical attack and repeated its doubts that the Syrian government of President Bashar al-Assad was to blame.
"There is mounting evidence that the incident was a pretence set up by the rebel opposition with the aim of accusing the Damascus government of
everything," the statement said.

Pakistan has an edge over India in underwater combat: TOI

Pakistan has an edge over India in underwater combat: TOI

NEW DELHI: If India goes to war today, it will have just seven to eight aging conventional submarines to deploy against enemy forces. This deeply blunts the country's underwater combat edge against Pakistan, which already has five relatively new conventional submarines and is angling to get six more advanced vessels from China, said a report published in Times of India.
Beijing, of course, is leagues ahead with 47 diesel-electric submarines and eight nuclear-powered ones.
The INS Sindhurakshak disaster last week, which blew a big hole in the Indian Navy's operational capabilities, has further compounded the problems.
Indian Navy is left with only 13 aging diesel-electric submarines - 11 of them over 20 years old. Four of the 13 submarines - nine Kilo-class of Russian origin and four HDW of German-origin are undergoing "a long refit'' to extend their operational lives. "Two kilo-class or Sindhugosh series submarines are at Hindustan Shipyard Ltd at Visakhapatnam, while two HDW or Shishumar-class vessels are at the Mumbai naval dockyard for the long refits," said a source.
The Navy does have one nuclear-powered submarine INS Chakra, taken on a 10-year lease from Russia last year, but it's not armed with nuclear-tipped missiles due to international treaties. INS Chakra can serve as a deadly `hunter-killer' of enemy submarines and warships with its 300-km range Klub-S land-attack cruise missiles as well as other missiles and advanced torpedoes.
Pakistan Navy, incidentally, is the first force in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) to have submarines equipped with air-independent propulsion (AIP) in the shape of three French Agosta-90B vessels.
Conventional submarines have to surface every few days to get oxygen to recharge their batteries. Bu those fitted with AIP can stay submerged for much longer periods to significantly boost their stealth and combat capabilities, somewhat narrowing the gap with nuclear-powered submarines.
India, however, has even dithered in taking a decision to fit AIP in the last two of the six French Scorpene submarines being constructed for over Rs 23,000 crore at Mazagon Docks under "Project-75'', which is already running four years behind the original 2012-17 induction schedule. The first Scorpene will be delivered only by November 2016.

Indian forces attack Pakistan border posts

SIALKOT: Indian forces on Sunday resorted to unprovoked firing on a Pakistan Rangers’ checkpost in Sialkot sector and along the Line of Control (LoC) in Nakial sector near Kotli, military sources said.
The sources said that India’s Border Security Force resorted to unprovoked firing on the Pakistani checkpost.
"Intermittent exchange of fire continues. No loss reported so far," a military official was quoted as saying.
The situation remains tense between the South Asian neighbours since New Delhi accused Pakistan Army of killing Indian troops in occupied Kashmir.
Islamabad has been showing restraint despite Indian aggression after the recent events in which its High Commission was targeted by protesters in New Delhi.
The New Delhi-Lahore friendship bus was also stopped by Indian protesters on Friday.

Monday's launch of INS Vikrant marks the end of the first phase of its construction

India has unveiled its first home-built aircraft carrier from a shipyard in southern Kerala state.
The 37,500 tonne INS Vikrant is expected to go for extensive trials in 2016 before being inducted into the navy by 2018, reports say.
With this, India joins a select group of countries capable of building such a vessel.
Other countries capable of building a similar ship are the US, the UK, Russia and France.
Monday's launch of INS Vikrant marks the end of the first phase of its construction.
The ship will be then re-docked for outfitting and further construction.
The ship, which will have a length of 260m (850ft) and a breadth of 60m, has been built at the shipyard in Cochin.
It was designed and manufactured locally, using high grade steel made by a state-owned steel company.
Vice-Admiral RK Dhowan of India's navy has described the launch as the "crowning glory" of the navy's programme to produce vessels on home soil.

Drone Attacks in Pakistan

John Kerry pledges early end to Pakistan drone strikes

Many Pakistanis resent the casualties from drone strikes
US Secretary of State John Kerry has concluded a visit to Pakistan by pledging to end drone strikes against militants "very, very soon".
Correspondents say his comments are intended as a message to ease anti-American resentment in strategically important Pakistan.
On Thursday Mr Kerry agreed to resume high-level talks over security issues.
The talks were stalled after 24 Pakistani soldiers were killed by the US on the Afghan border in 2011.
'Sovereignty violation'
CIA drone strikes have killed up to 3,460 people in Pakistan since 2004.

We are here to speak honestly with each other, openly about any gaps that may exist that we want to try to bridge”
John KerryUS Secretary of State
Most strikes take place in the troubled border region of North Waziristan, which is regarded as an al-Qaeda and Taliban stronghold.
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, who won elections in May, met Mr Kerry on Thursday.
Mr Sharif has consistently demanded an end to such attacks, saying they violate Pakistan's sovereignty.
His foreign affairs adviser, Sartaj Aziz, told reporters the US should stop the strikes "not just curtail them".
Correspondents say the issue is complicated by the fact that some Pakistani officials have been accused of criticising the use of drones in public while co-operating with them in private.
'Constructive and positive'
"I think the programme will end as we have eliminated most of the threat and continue to eliminate it," Mr Kerry said in a television interview.

US drone strikes in Pakistan

  • Bureau of Investigative Journalism has recorded 368 drone strikes in Pakistan
  • Every strike has to be approved by US president
  • Vast majority carried out under Barack Obama
  • Four US citizens killed in strikes since 2009
"The president has a very real timeline and we hope it's going to be very, very soon," he said when asked whether the US had a schedule for ending the strikes.
Analysts say his comments went further than those of President Barack Obama, who said in a 23 May speech that drone strikes would decrease in "the Afghan war theatre" as US troops withdraw by the end of 2014.
The number of strikes has fallen significantly over the past 30 months - totalling 17 so far this year compared to 48 in all of 2012 and 73 in 2011, according to estimates compiled by the New America Foundation.
Speaking after meeting Mr Sharif on Thursday, Mr Kerry said their talks were "constructive" and "positive".
"We are here to speak honestly with each other, openly about any gaps that may exist that we want to try to bridge," Mr Kerry said. "Our people deserve that we talk directly."
